Swingin' Sixties Retreat

Running With Scissors Quilters
are coming to Hotel Hamilton & Event Center for a
SWINGIN' SIXTIES RETREAT
in Quilt Town, USA - Hamilton Missouri.

September 21-24, 2021!

3 Night Retreat with 4 instructors and 3 projects ONLY $425!

Join the Running With Scissors Quilters team for 3 fun-filled days at the Swingin' Sixties Retreat. You will learn a unique method to make a six-pointed star in a square using the new Six In A Square© tool. We’ll be making three exciting projects; a wall hanging, a quilt available in 3 sizes, and a table runner. You may also choose to learn to use the tool in another way to make a great block.

The Six in a Square© Tool ($36.50 value-included with retreat ticket) is designed to make 60 degree angled units that are sewn together without any “Y” seams to create a 6 pointed star in a square. The completed blocks are slightly oversized and trimmed to perfection with the same tool. It is versatile enough to make 10 different finished size blocks from 3” to 12” and comes with illustrated step by step instructions for both left and right handed quilters. The blocks can then be incorporated into one of your favorite designs, with other traditional blocks, or in one of our patterns. The possibilities are endless!

PROJECT: CROSSROADS

This first project will introduce you to the Six in a Square tool. Start your journey by making a stunning 44” square wall hanging that uses full and half stars.

PROJECT: NESTED STAR SPRINT

Take your 60 degree skills to the next level and learn the Nested Star Sprint while creating this beautiful table runner. Once you have learned this technique the design possibilities are endless.

PROJECT: FRENCH TWIST

A colorful variation on a traditional French Braid quilt. Gather an assortment of your favorite fabrics, your Six in a Square© tool and “Do the Twist”! Choose the size project you would like to make: Large (85” x 99”), Medium (66” x 76”), or Small (51” x 59”).

BONUS PROJECT: 12 POINTED STAR SPRINT

Eager for more…?? This optional session will teach the 12-Pointed Star Sprint by making a 12” block. After making the block, we will get the design juices flowing by discussing how color placement provides limitless variations. This bonus project is an additional pattern fee of only $7.50!

3 day Retreat with check-in beginning @ 2 pm Tuesday September 21st. Check out Friday September 24th 11am***.

2 Crazy Ladies are on their way back!

I am so excited to welcome

Karen Miller and Wendy Sheppard back to Hamilton.

Last fall these two crazy ladies (to know them is to love them!) came to Hamilton to host a retreat at Hotel Hamilton. They are a bundle of joy! We laughed, then laughed and laughed some more.
And there was a lot of sewing in there too!
Karen and Wendy both have a passion and an incredible gift
for Free Motion Quilting.

They will teach the basics of free motion from two different brains and perspectives. (We all learn differently!) They are super fun, non-judgemental, extremely patient and great teachers!
They wrap it all up with a ton of laughs and joy!

To make it even better, both Wendy and Karen are Aurifilosophers. They know a thing or two about thread and are willing to pass on all of that knowledge to make all your future projects even greater!

To follow Karen and her amazing brain find her at Redbird Quilt Co and follow her on Instagram @redbirdquiltco or on facebook

All the beautiful things Wendy makes can be found at WendySheppard and @ivory_spring on Instagram or Facebook

These two ladies are sure to brighten your day!

Lucky for us, they are on their way back, and we couldn't be more excited!!

JOIN US in Hamilton, MO!!!

ICE Storm

I come from a land of a lot of snow...the greatest snow on earth, actually..... UTAH!!

Snow has never intimidated me, or kept me from going out and getting things done.
However, the ice that we experience in Missouri is not snow! It's a death defying roller coaster with no brakes!! Just leaving the driveway is near impossible! You would think this would be a problem, but nope!! I just soak it in. We play games, watch movies, sew, and craft! The Redford's look forward to a good ice storm or freezing rain because it helps us slow down and enjoy each other!!
The last two weekends we have been "iced in" and I have ZERO complaints!!

A Memory Quilt

Four years ago, after visiting the Bed & Breakfast with the boys, we decided to ask our guests to help us with a special project.
How great would it be to make a quilt, one block each representing our guests. It was a little far fetched at the time to think I would ever have more than just a wall hanging. However, guests responded with so many BEAUTIFUL blocks. I just pieced together the last of this Quilt. It will be our "first four years". It is incredible to look at each of these blocks, to think of the guests, the memories!
I look forward to the next four years with great joy! I am so blessed!!

Missouri Quilt Museum in Hamilton Missouri- phase 2

Work has started on the Phase Two renovations of the Missouri Quilt Museum. The
museum is located in the 100-year-old former Hamilton High School. Phase Two renovations
will include the buildings gymnasium and lower level.
Spokesperson for the museum, Dakota Redford, said the renovations will include a
second quilt gallery, 4 new exhibits, and several hands-on classrooms. Redford also announced
a special permanent display for the second gallery.
“We are extremely excited to announce that the Missouri Quilt Museum has partnered
with the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky, and will host a permanent gallery for
the National Quilt Museum.” “The National Quilt Museum has one of the best and most
comprehensive quilt collections in the world.” Redford said. “We will be hosting a revolving
exhibit of their quilts.”
The National Quilt Museum Gallery will be located in the gymnasium section of the
building. The collection will be rotated quarterly, Redford said. “We will have a fresh exhibit
from the National Quilt Museum every three months. And with our other galleries, there will be
something new every month at the museum.”
Planned exhibits FOR Phase Two include Elias Howe’s Workshop, a Native American
exhibit, and Underground Railroad Quilt exhibit and a Flour Sack exhibit.

“The Missouri Quilt Museum is not a traditional quilt museum,” Redford said. “In
addition to numerous quilt displays, we are presenting a series of exhibits that tell the history of
quilting in North America. Quilts have played an important role in our history,” Redford said,
“and we want to tell that story.
Redford cited the current Log Cabin Exhibit at the museum. “We have on display a quilt
that was made in 1834. It is a paper piece quilt in which pieces of fabric were cut and sewn onto
pieces of paper as the quilt was being made. As paper was scarce in those days, handwritten
letters were cut up and used as the paper to make the quilt,” Redford said. “And back then,
quilts were made for warmth, so the pieces of the paper were left in the quilt. You can find out
what was actually happening back in 1834 by reading the snippets of letters used in this quilt.”
The museum also has over 500 toy sewing machines on display, thimbles from around the
world, and a growing collection of antique sewing machines and irons. Outside of the museum
is the World’s Largest Spool of Thread. The spool stands 22 feet tall and contains over 1 million
yards of thread.
The Missouri Quilt Museum is open Tuesday - Saturday, 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A $10
donation is requested as the price of admission. Private tours are also available. Information
can be found online at www.missouriquiltmuseum.com or by calling 435-849-2564.

Creative projects, delicious food and lots of friendship fun and laughter!!

Big thank you to Lynne & Kathy for planning such an amazing week! And thank you to Barb and Mary and Jenny for joining in on the fun! It was a blast ladies

Hamilton's First Snow

The first snow of the season flew yesterday and Hamilton Missouri residents awoke to a thin layer of the cold white stuff on the ground.
Although unusual to have snow in October, not unusual is for that sun to rise and melt it all off before noon. And that is pretty close to how it went down. Now again, day 2 and snow flurries are flying outside and the kids still haven't donned their Halloween Costumes. Pull out the snow suits and bundle up the kiddos because we are expected to receive a few more inches tonight!

 About the Missouri Quilt Museum

The Missouri Quilt Museum will be opening in the original Hamilton High School built in 1921, located at 300 East Bird, in Hamilton, Missouri. The building will undergo extensive renovations, however, it will maintain its original character as a 100-year-old historic schoolhouse. The Missouri Quilt Museum will complement the National Quilt Museum by telling the history of Quilting through exhibits and stories. There will be hands on exhibits as well as those that bring to life the history and passion of quilting throughout the years. Not only will you find some of the best quilts ever made displayed in multiple quilt galleries, but also antique machines including featherweights and treadles and an outstanding variety of over 500 vintage toy sewing machines. With the help of quilters around the world, we are also creating the world’s largest thimble collection for display. You may have already heard about the 22 foot tall World’s Largest Spool of Thread that greets guests to the museum; our first interactive exhibit. Bring some thread and add to it!

Hamilton Missouri is home to Missouri Star Quilt Company which operates 12 quilt shops in Hamilton. They have revitalized Hamilton and turned it into Quilt Town, USA! Hamilton is the perfect venue for the Missouri Quilt Museum. Our museum has been featured in Bill on the Road, Missouri Life Magazine, and Missouri Star Quilt Company Block Magazine.
